MIDRAND, 10 June 2014 – Korea’s Huyn Park maintained his lead on the second day of the IGT Tour’s Race to the USA Dainfern, but Calvin Caldeira is hot on his heels after the young amateur matched Park’s three-under-par 69 on Tuesday.

The Korean showed all his battling qualities at Dainfern Estate and Country Club and limited the damage of a double bogey and two drops with seven birdies to eke out an aggregate of six-under-par 138.

This was good enough for a one shot lead over Caldeira, who reeled in a string of four birdies from the 15th to move within striking distance of a maiden IGT Tour win for a second week running.

Cape Town’s Lean Boezaart carded a 70 to finish in third on 141, while Lucas Steyn matched Park and Caldeira with a 69 of his own to climb to fourth on 142.

Joint overnight leader Okkie Strydom slipped to fifth on one under 143 after a costly 74.

Caldeira overcame a bogey at the first with a chip-in birdie at the next hole. After holing a 20-footer for birdie at the third, he dropped another shot with at the par-four fifth.

“I had a horseshoe at the first and three-putted, and had another three-putt at the fourth and I had to wonder if it was going to be one of those days,” said the 20-year-old from Krugersdorp.

“But I drove the ball well for the rest of the nine and the putter behaved until I got to the 12th, where the three-putt devil stuck out his head again.”

The bogey at the par-five 12th would be the last blue number on his card, though, as Caldeira parred the next two holes before his short stick caught fire.

“I knocked in a 40-footer for birdie at the 15th to get the run going,” Caldeira said.

“I hit it to 10 feet at the 16th and 17th and knocked it on the green for two at the 18th and two-putted for birdie. It was a great way to finish the round, and it’s given me a real boost.”

While Park notched his first pro victory in the Race to the USA series, but Caldeira is still looking to break his duck on the IGT Tour.

“I had a chance last week at the Race to the USA Krugersdorp, but I threw it away in the final round,” Caldeira said. “That’s the reason I campaign on the IGT Tour. I need to get use to the competitive environment and playing against the guys that chase the money raises the pressure for me. Hopefully I can do better on Wednesday.”

Meanwhile James Searson countered an opening 81 with a 66 to claim the low round of the day and finish well above the cut, set at 12-over-par 157.

Theodor Oosthuizen, the cousin of 2010 Open champion, Louis Oosthuizen, holed out that the par-three 16th for his first ace in the first round. The amateur was thrilled to reach the final round after doubling up on 75s.

And Bonita Bredenhann will be only rose among the thorns after the Namibian carded rounds of 75 and 79 to finish two strokes inside the cutline.
