How to Play Modderfontein coming up 13 – 15 May Big Easy IGT Challenge #3

In a new feature for 2019, the Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour will speak to the General Manager/club professional at every club we visit during the season to get the keys to the course from the person who knows it best.

Next up it is Mark Bruyns, General Manager, Modderfontein Golf Club, host of the Big Easy IGT Challenge #3 13 – 15 May 2019.

Mark Bruyns advice

Modderfontein is one of the more challenging courses in Gauteng, taking into consideration that there are 9 holes with water in play.

The late rains have left the course pretty wet so it is playing a little longer. The prevailing wind is a north wester, which changes in August to a south wester.

The opening hole is a dogleg right par5 that is very reachable for the better players with a 3 wood or hybrid of the tee and long iron in, so it should get you off to a quick start.

The second is a tough par 4 with water protecting the green on the left, be careful or you could give back a shot. The 3rd hole is a par three with narrow green, it suits a draw as it is better to mis right than left. Holes 4, 5 and six plain sailing and percentage golf should give you a few chances.

The 8th is a reachable par 5 that should yield a lot of birdies.

Hole nine a great pare 3, well protected by water.

The back nine is a real test with only the par 3, 11th is without water. The 13th hole a real risk and reward par 5, with Out of Bounds on the right and water around the green, but get a good Tee shot in and it’s a medium iron in.

Percentage golf should see you through this nine with 16, 17 and 18 as birdie chances.

All in all, a good test of every aspect of your game

About Modderfontein

Modderfontein Golf Course consistently rates in the top 60 of South African golf courses. Measuring the length of 6651 meters the par of the course is 72. The layout is on a parkland setting and has firm greens with tree lined fairways. These elements combined with challenging strategic bunkering provide an excellent test of golf even for the most accomplished golfer. Modderfontein Golf Course hosts numerous important amateur tournaments which sees over 40 000 rounds per year. We are hidden away in the centre of Gauteng, picturesque, harmonious and the ultimate golf hideaway. The outpost of Modderfontein which dates back to 1894 – was the forefather of Modern-day Johannesburg.

The old gold mining town grew up on dynamite, which was used to blast the Witwatersrand Hills, where around 40% of the World’s Gold was mined.

We can therefore thank the Modderfontein Dynamite Factory, the world’s largest Dynamite Company – for inaugurating Modderfontein Golf Club back in 1935 and commissioned Arthur Tomsett to design the course and opened by Bobby Locke.

In 1990, the course was redesigned by Hugh Baiocchi with 7 dams and 12 meandering streams to ensure enough water supplies year-round.
