JOHANNESBURG, 4 November 2013 – Korea’s DK Kim will take a healthy lead into the second round of the IGT Tour’s eighth Race to Q-School after setting the target with a stunning 64 in the first round of CRM Golf Club.

The 24-year-old was in scintillating form as he notched six birdies and an eagle in a flawless display at the Johannesburg layout to finish two strokes clear of top amateur Callum Mowat and professional Kerwin Marais.

Kim has been trying to re-enter the winner’s circle since he claimed the Race to Asia Match Play at Kempton Park Golf Club in May, but despite a handful of top five finishes, just hasn’t managed to push through.

After a poor result at Silver Lakes last week, the Korean spent some time on the mental aspects of the game with his coach, Gavan Levenson, at Glendower Golf Club and that seemed to do the trick.

Kim started with three pars before he began his charge with birdie at the fourth.

“After a solid drive at the par-five, I had 225 meters left to the pin, so I pulled out a hybrid and let it rip,” Kim explained. “I was left with a curling left to right putt about 12 feet from the hole. I thought I hit it too hard, but it hit the back of the cup and dropped for eagle. That eagle really got me going.”

He added two more birdies at the sixth and eighth holes and begun to circle back on five under.

Still blemish-free, he picked up more birdies at 12 and 16 and boxed yet another longish putt for birdie at the finishing hole.

“It was good to work with Gavan and just get my focus back,” Kim said.

“I came into this event with a much better mindset. I managed to stay focussed and in the moment and things just went my way.

“This course had a role to play, though. We played here during the winter and I couldn’t believe I was at the same course; it is in incredible condition and the greens are rolling fast and true.”

It was clear that Kim was not alone in enjoying the sunny weather and well-conditioned course, as 28 players in the 85-plus field broke par on day one.

“This is a great track and you can see the guys enjoyed by the scores out there,” said Mowat, who leads the 25-strong amateur line-up.

“It was nice to make a couple of birdies and to finish under par again. It gives the confidence a good old boost and I reckon we can all do with some confidence ahead of the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School in January.”
