Naicker leads final four at Zwartkop
TSHWANE, 1 June 2016 – Duane Keun needed four extra holes to dispatch a feisty Justin Turner, NJ Arnoldi went to 21 holes against amateur Hilton Hughes, CJ Levey edged out his cousin at the 18th hole, but Damian Naicker took just 14 holes mow down Estiaan Conradie in the quarter-finals of the 2016 Zwartkop Match Play Championship on Thursday.
Three-time IGT Tour winner Estiaan Conradie whipped Anton Haig 4 & 2 in the morning session at Zwartkop Country Club to set up a quarter-final meeting with Naicker, who ousted Pretoria amateur Christopher van der Merwe 3 & 2.
Naicker was a valuable bunker for the victorious Central Gauteng team in the 2011 South African Inter-Provincial and showed his match play prowess with a birdie-birdie start. He won three holes in succession from the sixth to lead 5-up at the turn and the never relinquished the lead.
The 18-year-old Wingate amateur mounted a brief comeback with victories at the 10th and 13th, but the back nine belonged to Naicker. The Modderfontein golfer won the 12th and booked his semi-final clash against Levey with victory at the par four 14th.
Centurion’s Levey knocked out Pretoria amateur Eric Nel 4 & 2, while his cousin David Ashley from England won his third round match against Wesley Baptiste 1-up.
The two GFG Academy stable-mates halved the first hole, but Levey took first blood at the second. Ashley hit back to win the next two holes and the Englishman was 2-up after winning the seventh, but Levey wasn’t giving up and won the eighth to narrow the gap.
The pair traded victories at 10 and 11, but after halving the next four holes, Levey took back control with back-to-back wins at 16 and 17 and sealed a 1-up victory at the final hole.
Meanwhile Keun handed Pieter Moolman a 6 & 5 drubbing to go up and Turner downed amateur Marco de Beer 5 & 3 to set up an all Wanna Be A Champion Academy quarter-final.
Ladybrandt’s Keun led 1-up through the turn against after winning the first and seventh holes, but Turner from Western Province took control of the match with victories at 11, 12 and 15.
Two down with three to play, Keun rallied to win 16 and 18 to force the match into extra time. The pair halved the first three holes until Keun ended the battle with victory at the 22nd hole.
Arnoldi from Silver Lakes defeated amateur Ruan Korb 4 & 2 and to make the quarter-final against Hughes, who eliminated former Protea cricketer Johan van der Wath 2 & 1.
The Pretoria golfer was 3-up through 13, but Hughes extended the match with a hat-trick of wins at 16, 17 and 18. The pair halved 19 and 20, but Arnoldi sealed victory over the Polokwane amateur at the 21st hole. He will face Keun in the semi-final.
