Romano Saincic won the fifth leg of the Orange Crab Race to Asia, held over 54 holes at the Irene Country Club, Pretoria, from 6 to 8 May.

Saincic started the final day one shot behind overnight leader Jaco Mouton. His final-round 4-under-par 68 was enough to win by one on 11-under par from Mouton, who shot a 2-under 70.

Saincic’s rounds over the three days were 70, 67 & 68.

Saincic was trailing Mouton the whole final day but stuck to his guns and eventually took the lead on the 15th hole.

Mouton had a three-putt on the 16th hole and that gave Saincic a two-shot lead with the par-5 17th hole coming up.

Mouton had a cracker of a drive and Saincic replied with a perfect 4-iron to find the green, leaving him 20-foot putt for eagle. Mouton also found the green, but both just missed their eagle putts.

Saincic’s drive on the 18th found the fairway and Mouton launched another cracker to be 10 metres short of the green.

Saincic’s second shot came up 30 feet short and Mouton’s eagle chip came up seven feet short. Mouton made his birdie putt and Saincic two-putted to the huge relief of his teammates at GFG Academy.

Saincic thanked his coach, Graeme Francis. “We have been working hard and it is great to have my first win under the belt.”

The winner of the low round on the final day went to Gideon Pienaar with a 4-under-par 68 on a count-out from Saincic and Coert Groenewald.

The Orange Crab Race to Asia has only two events left and at this stage it looks like Jaco Mouton can start packing his bags with a bunch of players in contention to fill the other three spots.
